V.tal, Latin America’s largest neutral digital infrastructure company, has inked a significant long-term agreement for 100% renewable electricity to power its Brazilian operations.
The deal, struck with Atlas Renewable Energy and Atiaia Renováveis, marks a substantial step towards sustainable energy use in the region’s burgeoning digital sector.
The contracts will yield an annual 947 GWh of solar power, with 710 GWh sourced from Atlas’s Draco Solar Complex in Arinos, Minas Gerais, and 237 GWh from Atiaia’s Agreste Solar Complex in Tacaimbó, Pernambuco. Both facilities are slated to commence operations in 2026.
The renewable energy will fuel V.tal‘s extensive network of buildings across Brazil, including three operational Tecto data centres in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza.
Notably, it will also support the Mega Lobster, a large-scale data centre currently under construction in Fortaleza, Ceará.
The agreement aligns with Tecto‘s expansion strategy, which involves an initial investment of US$1 billion.
Bruno Giovenazzi, CFO of V.tal and Tecto Data Centers, said: ‘As Brazil’s largest digital infrastructure company, V.tal is a significant energy consumer. Our decision to self-produce 100% renewable energy is strategic, aligning with our sustainability commitment and meeting our clients’ needs for more efficient and sustainable business solutions. This is particularly crucial in the data centre sector, a critical enabler in the current landscape of AI and high-volume data processing.’
The renewable energy initiative is projected to prevent over four million tonnes of CO2 emissions between 2026 and 2041. Moreover, the solar projects are expected to bolster local economic development during both the construction and operational phases.
V.tal‘s extensive infrastructure includes over 22 million homes ready for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) provisioning and 26,000 kilometres of submarine cables linking Brazil to Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Bermuda, and the United States.
The company also operates data centres in Brazil and Colombia through its subsidiary, Tecto.
As a signatory of the UN Global Compact, V.tal adheres to principles of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, further solidifying its commitment to responsible business practices.
Tecto Data Centers, a V.tal business unit, offers specialised Edge and Hyperscale solutions, leveraging V.tal‘s connectivity ecosystem.
With a neutral approach and experienced team, Tecto focuses on ensuring continuous performance and availability, while prioritising sustainability and national digitalisation.
